The Belarusian language is what distinguishes Belarusians from others. Aliaksandr Lukashenka said this on January 25 at a meeting with scientists of the country. He suggested thinking about how to make every Belarusian know his own language.

By the way, by the end of 2021, the Belarusian Language Society (TBM) lost its state registration. And the detained dissidents often testified that policemen were especially tough on those who spoke Belarusian.

In this state struggle with the Belarusian language, Lukashenka accused… opposition.

«Thanks to our crazy white-red-whites, we, sweeping everything away, as they say, almost threw out the baby along with the bathwater. You should understand that what distinguishes us from others is the Belarusian language. We don’t need to walk away from that,» he said.

Lukashenka said that everyone in Belarus knows the Russian language well and now it is necessary to improve the knowledge of Belarusian. «If we do not know the Belarusian language, we are not Belarusians,» he explained. And he added that there is nothing anti-Russian in this.

He also said that there will be no «imposition» of the Belarusian language. Lukashenka’s statements about the need to know the Belarusian language are ritually heard every few years, but in reality the state does almost nothing to support the Belarusian language.
