CNN, citing its sources, reports that the United States is considering various sanctions against the Kremlin designed to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine.

It is reported that US sanctions can be aimed at various sectors of the economy — energy producers and Russian banks, and can also affect the Russian sovereign debt. There is a possibility that they will also affect Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, limiting travel opportunities for his representatives and Russian oligarchs, and closing their access to the American banking system. In addition, the so-called «nuclear option» is being considered — disconnection of Russia from the international payment system SWIFT.

«We have put together a pretty damn aggressive [sanctions] package»,– one of the sources said. The source has also added that if Russia invades Ukraine, the US and Europe together will impose the worst economic sanctions that have ever been imposed on a country, outside of Iran and North Korea.

In addition, it is reported that in the United States there are fears that the Kremlin may take retaliatory measures, in particular, «using energy as a weapon». The decision to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation has not yet been made. According to the channel’s sources, the US President Joe Biden is negotiating with European partners, many of whom have closer economic relations with Russia, in hope of coordinated action.
