Today, on the eve of Dziady and in keeping with the tradition, diplomats of the European Union, Great Britain, the United States and Switzerland visited the memorial complex in Kurapaty to honor the memory of countless lives and talents that were destroyed by totalitarianism. This is stated in the message published on the page of the EU Delegation to Belarus on Facebook.
«We show our respect for those Belarusians who have worked bravely and persistently for decades to see that there will be no more roads to death», – the diplomats noted.
On the night of October 29-30, the Night of Executed Poets is held in Belarus. At this time in 1937, the Soviet special services shot more than a hundred representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia — writers, scientists, statesmen.
Among those executed are Belarusian intellectuals Mihas Charot, Ales Dudar, Mihas Zaretsky, Platon Golovach, Anatol Volny, Todor Klyashtorny, Yurka Lyavonny, Valery Moryakov.
According to official data, 132 people were killed on the night of October 29 to 30, but the victims, according to historians, may be more.
It should be noted that during the commemorative ceremony, journalists of the pro-regime media tried to question diplomats: they repeatedly asked what they were doing there, why they came to Kurapaty and asked other questions that could be provocative, including the attitude to Nazism and the fact that in Ukraine a monument to Stepan Bandera was set.
