Tatiana Shchyttsova, the representative of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on Education and Science spoke about the detention of Ksenia Martul, the lecturer of the Faculty of Journalism of the Belarusian State University. We quote her words unchanged.

The regime continues to persecute talented teachers and academics with active citizenship. Ksenia had a telegram channel Gender_gap, which had an educational nature and was aimed at overcoming social stereotypes that degrade human dignity. At the end of November, Ksenia told her colleagues that in the propaganda channel «Bondareva. Without Bills» there were posts containing insults against her and accusations of LGBT propaganda. She wrote that she understood the threat, but did not want to leave students and flee Minsk. Today, she was taken to Akrestsina.

The detention of Ksenia shows that the regime suppresses any public manifestation of independent judgment, seeking to achieve total silence and obedience from citizens.

The unceremonious intrusion of law enforcement agencies’ representatives right into the university auditorium suggests that the «security forces» feel like full-fledged masters everywhere. This barbaric manner of behavior is aimed at escalating the atmosphere of fear in Belarusian society.

Although it is impossible to speak out publicly against this lawlessness today, students and professors can maintain autonomy of thought and maintain academic solidarity. I am sure that Ksenia’s students and colleagues will find an opportunity to show their support to her.
