Customs officers and citizens of Belarus to be tried in Lithuania for cigarette smuggling

Two lithuanian customs officers and two citizens of Belarus will be tried in Vilnius. They are accused of smuggling cigarettes and illegal possession of excisable goods as part of an organized group. In addition, customs officers are accused of exceeding their official powers, Lithuanian customs reports.

According to the case file, the defendants were engaged in cigarette smuggling in 2019. In Belarus, cigarettes were loaded into trucks that crossed the border at the Shalchininkai checkpoint. Customs officers let the cars pass without checking the cargo. According to the investigation, four trucks with more than 3 million packs of cigarettes worth almost 10 million euros got to Lithuania in this way.
