Tonight, On December 12, the democratic forces of Belarus will hold meetings with the EU leadership at the headquarters of the EU Council and the European Commission in Brussels. During the meetings, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will hold negotiations with Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, and Charles Michel, the President of the European Council.

At the meetings, the development of relations between Belarus and the EU now and after Lukashenko’s departure, Belarus’ participation in the Eastern Partnership, as well as the EU strategy for Belarus will be discussed.

In addition, today, a high-level multilateral meeting between the democratic forces of Belarus and EU ministers will be held chaired by Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy. During this meeting, the format of participation of Belarusian civil society in the Eastern Partnership and other EU programs will be discussed. They will also discuss how to support civil society in preparing the transition period in Belarus, what scenarios for starting a national dialogue on new elections in Belarus may be, how to help Belarus develop economic and social reforms after free elections.

In addition to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, representatives of NAM, the Coordination Council, Viktar Babaryka’s team, Viasna human rights center and others will represent the democratic forces at the meetings.

«The fact that the regime has destroyed relations with many partners and withdrawn itself from the Eastern Partnership does not mean that these relations have been destroyed by Belarusians. It has lost its legitimacy and no longer represents the will of the people. And the people want to look for friends, not enemies. People want to think about the future, not the past. Therefore, I am grateful for such support from the people who determine the future of Europe. As I said in the European Parliament, we, Belarusians, are the same Europeans, and our problems also need joint solutions and actions. And I am glad that these words were heard»,–  Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said.
