Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the democratic forces of Belarus, commented on yesterday’s telephone conversation between Angela Merkel and Alexander Lukashenka. We remind that they talked by phone about the situation at the border between Belarus and the European Union. The need to provide humanitarian assistance to refugees and migrants was discussed.
Here is what Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya writes about this:
«Yesterday, Europe at the EU Foreign Affairs Council confirmed its unity with the Belarusians: all 27 ministers agreed that the regime must be stopped. We are in constant contact with representatives of the UK, Canada and the USA. And I know that Merkel’s call was not an invitation from the EU to dialogue. After all, the German government continues to support the fifth and develop the sixth package of sanctions against the regime. So his attempt to hide political isolation behind this call is not a page turned. It’s a torn page from the diary of a poor student who wants to hide his failure.
I met with Angela Merkel. From the first meeting, it’s clear that this is a politician for whom human life is the main priority. For the same reason, a year ago she called a man who lost the elections in Belarus. Her call went unanswered – after all, it was never in his interests to care about Belarusians.
But I will continue to stand for Belarusians and their demands: the release of all prisoners for political reasons and – after that – the start of a dialogue on new elections. To express this demand, it’s time to join the Rabochy Rukh and the Peramoga plan».
