On December 2, 2021, the EU, the US, Canada and the UK extended sanctions against the regime in Belarus. The sanctions affect officials, companies, enterprises, tour operators and hotels that helped or organized the illegal crossing of the EU border through Belarus and thus participated in the instrumentalization of migration for political purposes. We tell you how three countries and the EU have expanded their sanctions lists.

The 5th EU sanctions package: 17 people and 11 companies

It’s said in the EU statement: «The EU has strongly condemned the Lukashenko regime for deliberately putting people’s lives and wellbeing in danger and stirring up the crisis at the EU’s external borders, in an attempt to detract attention from the situation in Belarus, where brutal repression and human rights violations are continuing and worsening».

The following came under the EU sanctions:

  • Anatoliy Lappo, Chairman of the State Border Committee;
  • Igor Kriuchkov, Head of Separate Service for Active Measures (ASAM) of the Special Forces of the State Border Committee;
  • Konstantin Molostov, Head of the Grodno Border Group;
  • Pavel Kharchenko, Head of the Polotsk Border Detachment;
  • Igor Gutnik, Head of the Brest Border Group;
  • Aleksandr Davidiuk, Head of the Lida Border Detachment;
  • Maxim Butranets, Head of the Smorgon Border Group;
  • Anatoliy Glaz, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Sergei Epikhov, Judge at the Minsk Regional Court;
  • Igor Liubovitski, Judge at the Supreme Court;
  • Sergei Girgel, Senior Prosecutor of the General Prosecutor’s office;
  • Valentina Kulik, Judge at the Supreme Court;
  • Igor Marshalov, Director of the Financial Investigations Department of the State Control Committee;
  • Andrey Prokopuk, Deputy Director of the Financial Investigations Department of the State Control Committee;
  • Anna Sokolovskaya, Judge of the Judicial Collegium for Civil Cases at the Supreme Court;
  • Marat Markov, Chairman of the Management Board of the State-controlled TV channel ONT;
  • Dmitriy Karsiuk, Judge at the Central District of the City of Minsk Court;
  • Belavia;
  • Tsentrkurort;
  • Oskartour;
  • Hotel Minsk;
  • Hotel Planeta;
  • ASAM;
  • Cham Wings Airlines (Syria);
  • Visa center VIP Grub (Turkey);

US sanctions: 12 entities and 20 people

The US Department of the Treasury reports that in addition to imposing sanctions against 20 individuals and 12 enterprises, three aircraft also come under the sanctions: Agusta-Westland AW-139 with registration number EW-001PH, which belongs to Slavkali, and two Il-76TD with registration numbers EW-78779 and EW-78843, owned by Transaviaexport.

The following came under the US sanctions:

  • Dmitriy Korzyuk, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
  • Denis Chemodanov, husband of Olga Chemodanova, former Spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;

  • Mikhail Bedunkevich, Deputy Head of GUBOPiK;
  • Dmitriy Baskov, Member of the Council of the Republic;
  • Dmitriy Lukashenka, Chairman of the Board of the Presidential Sports Club and member of the NOC;
  • Aleksandr Alyoksa;
  • Igor Butkevich;
  • Igor Gutnik, Head of the Brest Border Group;
  • Dmitriy Kovach;
  • Andrei Makarevich;

UK sanctions: «Belaruskali» and 8 people

«The UK believes in free speech, a free press and freedom of association. We will not look away while members of the opposition, journalists and activists continue to be beaten, jailed and killed, or forced into exile. These sanctions continue to target important sources of revenue to the Lukashenko regime and place severe restrictions on those responsible for some of the worst anti-democratic acts in Belarus»,– Liz Truss, Foreign Secretary, said.
