Sergey Aleinik, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, met with Benedetto Della Vedova, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, in Rome on January 11.
According to the Italian newsagency Nova, Della Vedova told his Belarusian counterpart about the unacceptable human rights situation in Belarus, recalling his meetings with representatives of the Belarusian opposition in exile [Probably, he was talking about meetings with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya in Italy and Sweden last year — motolko.help]. According to the publication, Vedova expressed support for the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people, hoping for a solution to the crisis via political dialogue within the country.
In addition, Vedova condemned the exploitation of migrants at the border with the European Union, acknowledging that some recent signs of openness received by the Minsk authorities have eased tensions. The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of preserving the humanitarian aspect of bilateral relations, paying special attention to the timely resumption of citizens’ stay in medical institutions in full compliance with the current sanitary standards and the international adoption program.
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus decided to omit almost all the points, limiting themselves to one sentence in the official report on the results of the meeting.
«During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on topical issues of the Belarusian-Italian political agenda, economic cooperation, humanitarian projects, as well as relations between the European Union,» the website of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry states.
