Mikalai was sentenced to five years in a general regime penal colony. According to the indictment, from August 4 to November 1, 2020, he disseminated materials in his telegram channel calling for actions aimed at harming the national security of Belarus. On August 23, 2020, at unsanctioned mass events in Minsk, he went out on the roadway, shouted slogans, blocked the road, blocked the way for transport; made and stored bottles with a mixture of gasoline and mineral oil. Mikalai pleaded not guilty to any of the articles.
Mikalai was detained in a rented apartment in the settlement Sasnovy, Asipovichy district, in November 2020. During the search they found glass bottles with flammable and lubricating materials, which, according to the conclusion of a State Forensic Examination Committee of the Republic of Belarus, are items whose striking effect is based on the use of flammable substances. He was beaten during the arrest, which was confirmed by the expertise.
