Russian military equipment continues to be spotted in different regions of Belarus, with most reports coming from Gomel and Minsk regions. In Gomel region, Russian military equipment has already been spotted in all border areas with Ukraine.

Armaments, military and special equipment continue to arrive on the territory of Belarus – despite the fact that the joint operational exercise «Union Resolve – 2022» officially ended on February 20. Arrivals are made by both rail and air. The arrival of TOS-1A «Solntsepyok» heavy flamethrower systems from the units of the Radio, Chemical and Biological Defense troops of the Russian Federation causes special concern. In this regard, it is still impossible to give an accurate estimate of the number of the Russian military contingent on the territory of Belarus, as well as the number of incoming (and arriving) servicemen.

The highest concentration of Russian troops over the past week was observed mainly in Gomel region, as well as in the southern districts of Minsk and eastern districts of Brest region. It’s noteworthy that Russian units are moving closer to the border with Ukraine (in some cases, the distance to the state border is 1 kilometer).

Belarusian officials gave contradictory information about the issue of further presence of the Russian military contingent on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. For example, whereas Foreign Minister Makei said on February 16 that «not a single serviceman or unit of military equipment (of Russia) would remain after the exercise,» Defense Minister Khrenin said on February 20 that the inspection of the Union State’s rapid reaction forces would be continued. However, there is no information about the timing of the inspection, the number of forces of both countries involved in the inspection, etc. This circumstance allows us to state the complete lack of transparency in the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus after the exercise.

In addition, the events of the past week allow us to state the embodiment of fears that preceded the exercise «Union Resolve – 2022»: some units of the Russian Armed Forces will remain on the territory of Belarus – in an unknown number, status, and indefinite period.

February 14

The week began with a report from Mogilev, where in the morning of February 14 helicopters were seen moving from Smolensk region of Russia towards Bykhau district of Belarus.

On the same day, a convoy of military trucks with fuel tanks was moving in Mazyr (Gomel region, Belarus) towards the airfield in the village Vialiki Bokau.

A convoy of Russian Ural trucks was also seen on the M10 highway near Luninets (Brest region, Belarus), and a convoy of Russian military vehicles was seen on the M5 highway near Babruisk (Mogilev region, Belarus): KamAZ-5350, Ural-4320-31, communication vehicles and «Tigr» armored vehicle.

February 15

On February 15, the Ministry of Defense published a video of preparations for missile launches of the «Tochka» tactical missile system. It was reported that this would take place at the «Palesski» area, which is located in Brahin district (Gomel region, Belarus). Earlier, the equipment was spotted in this area in close proximity of 5-10 km from the border with Ukraine.


In the morning of the same day, a train with Russian military equipment was spotted in Pinsk (Brest Region, Belarus), heading toward Luninets. Eight Russian heavy multipurpose Mi-26 transport helicopters (the world’s largest transport helicopter to have gone into serial production), as well as about five Mi-8 helicopters can be seen in the photo from the Machulishchy airfield. Other photos also show the deployment of Russian troops near Rechitsa between the villages Bezuyeu and Yampal (Rechitsa district, Gomel region).

In addition, the movement of «Uragan» multiple rocket launchers and other Russian military equipment towards Lelchitsy (Gomel region, Belarus), which is 10 km from the border with Ukraine, was seen in Mazyr district.

February 17

On February 17, BuzzFeed News correspondent Christopher Miller posted new satellite images taken by Maxar Technologies on Twitter on February 15 and 16.

In the photos you can see a pontoon bridge over the Prypiat River, armored vehicles and troops at the Brest railway station and the Brest training ground, as well as satellite images taken on February 15 at the Ziabrauka airfield, 10 km from Gomel. It can be seen that most of the equipment that was previously there left, and instead there appeared helicopters, presumably Mi-8 and Mi-24.
