“Solntsepyok”, “Iskander”, “Grad”: Russian troops spotted 1 km from the Ukrainian border

Russian military equipment continues to be spotted in different regions of Belarus, with most reports coming from Gomel and Minsk regions. In Gomel region, Russian military equipment has already been spotted in all border areas with Ukraine.

Based on publicly available information gathered from February 14 to 20, 2022, the conclusions from the week before remain valid, and are finding new confirmation.

Armaments, military and special equipment continue to arrive on the territory of Belarus – despite the fact that the joint operational exercise “Union Resolve – 2022” officially ended on February 20. Arrivals are made by both rail and air. The arrival of TOS-1A “Solntsepyok” heavy flamethrower systems from the units of the Radio, Chemical and Biological Defense troops of the Russian Federation causes special concern. In this regard, it is still impossible to give an accurate estimate of the number of the Russian military contingent on the territory of Belarus, as well as the number of incoming (and arriving) servicemen.

The highest concentration of Russian troops over the past week was observed mainly in Gomel region, as well as in the southern districts of Minsk and eastern districts of Brest region. It’s noteworthy that Russian units are moving closer to the border with Ukraine (in some cases, the distance to the state border is 1 kilometer).

Belarusian officials gave contradictory information about the issue of further presence of the Russian military contingent on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. For example, whereas Foreign Minister Makei said on February 16 that “not a single serviceman or unit of military equipment (of Russia) would remain after the exercise,” Defense Minister Khrenin said on February 20 that the inspection of the Union State’s rapid reaction forces would be continued. However, there is no information about the timing of the inspection, the number of forces of both countries involved in the inspection, etc. This circumstance allows us to state the complete lack of transparency in the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus after the exercise.

In addition, the events of the past week allow us to state the embodiment of fears that preceded the exercise “Union Resolve – 2022”: some units of the Russian Armed Forces will remain on the territory of Belarus – in an unknown number, status, and indefinite period.

February 14

The week began with a report from Mogilev, where in the morning of February 14 helicopters were seen moving from Smolensk region of Russia towards Bykhau district of Belarus.

February 17

On February 17, BuzzFeed News correspondent Christopher Miller posted new satellite images taken by Maxar Technologies on Twitter on February 15 and 16.

In the photos you can see a pontoon bridge over the Prypiat River, armored vehicles and troops at the Brest railway station and the Brest training ground, as well as satellite images taken on February 15 at the Ziabrauka airfield, 10 km from Gomel. It can be seen that most of the equipment that was previously there left, and instead there appeared helicopters, presumably Mi-8 and Mi-24. In addition, fresh photos of the area near Rechitsa were also published, which show that most of the equipment has left the locations as of February 16, and one of the photos shows the column moving west.

Also on February 17, as a result of an accident near Mikashevichy, a Russian military Ural crushed a Belarusian passenger car on the M10 highway. The car was stuck between two Ural trucks, and the entire column of military vehicles stopped because of the accident.

On the same day, a large convoy of Russian military equipment was moving from Kalinkavichy in the direction of Mazyr along the R-31 highway. There were “Tigr”, KamAZ and Ural trucks, fuel trucks, and communications vehicles in the column.

In addition, an Ural-4320-31 with a trailer and two APCs were moving from the direction of Babruisk (Mogilev region, Belarus) towards Kalinkavichy (Gomel region) along the R-31 highway.

A video of volleys from the Russian “Grad” multiple rocket launchers at the exercise in Belarus also appeared. The Belarusian Defense Ministry showed pictures from the drills of the missile forces, artillery, aviation, and airborne troops of the Russian Armed Forces at the “Asipovichski” training ground. It was reported that “Smerch” multiple rocket launchers conducted a group missile strike during the exercise.

In addition, the movement of military equipment was spotted in Polatsk, Khoiniki, Brahin, Mazyr and Baranavichy that day.
