Today, the Gomel Regional Court has sentenced the defendants in the «Tsikhanouski’s case» in which Siarhei Tsikhanouski was sentenced to 18 years in a strengthened regime prison colony. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition, commented on her husband’s sentence to Deutsche Welle.
«I will not spend this day in tears just because such a figure was announced. I will spend this day in work, realizing that every step I take, every step of Belarusians brings us closer to the day when Siarhei will be free. Neither Siarhei, nor Mikalai Statkevich, nor Masha Kalesnikava, nor Uladzimir Tsyhanovich will be relieved by the fact that we will think all day about what a grief it is. Grief has been going on for a long time.
I’m not going to talk about the sentence to the kids because I don’t believe my kids will grow up without a father. Our daughter is too young to understand what prison is and what a sentence is. Her beloved dad will continue to send her cards and packages for the holidays. I won’t tell my son either. He is already at the age when he could understand, but I will not take away belief from a child»,– Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said.
All six defendants in the «Tsikhanouski’s case» were convicted in closed mode in the Gomel pre-trial detention center. The Gomel Regional Court sentenced Siarhei Tsikhanouski to 18 years in prison, Mikalai Statkevich– to 14 years, Ihar Losik, the author of the telegram channel «Belarus golovnogo mozga», and Uladzimir Tsyhanovich, the author of the MozgON Youtube channel, – to 15 years each, Artsiom Sakau, the cameraman of «A country to live in», and Dmitry Popov, the moderator of the social networks of «A country to live in», – to 16 years.
All the political prisoners will serve their sentences in a strengthened regime prison colony. In addition, they were obliged to pay 2.5 million rubles in compensation for the damage allegedly caused by them.
