German and Swedish Wikipedia changed the name of the Republic of Belarus from ‘Weiẞrussland’ (‘White Russia’) to ‘Belarus’, Franak Viacorka, the counselor of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, posted on his Twitter page. He noted that French Wikipedia still uses ‘White Russia’ (‘Biélorussie’), but expressed his hope that this is just a matter of time.
🇩🇪Wikipedia changed the name of the Republic of Belarus from “Weiẞrussland” (white Russia) to “Belarus” (historically, politically,& linguistically correct). 🇸🇪 replaced the name “Vitryssland” with «Belarus». 🇫🇷 Wikipedia still uses «Biélorussie» but it’s a matter of time I hope pic.twitter.com/jloXzESXnQ

Many Belarusians cannot accept the fact that their country is called incorrectly abroad. The term ‘White Russia’ is used not only by Germans, but also, for example, by Latvians (Baltkrievija). But there is the biggest controversy surrounding the word ‘Belorussia’ – the name of the republic, which was a part of the USSR. Most Russians still use this name, many without a second thought, because this is how they write and speak in the Russian media.
