МЗС Ірака закрывае консульствы Беларусі ў Багдадзе і Эрбіле
The Kurdish publication Rojnews reports that by the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, the Consulate General of Belarus in Baghdad and the honorary consulate of Erbil are closed.
According to the publication, consulates are closed to prevent the growth of immigration. The main reason for the closure was that the official Minsk simplified visa procedures and began to issue visas to the majority of applicants who then seek to illegally enter the EU through Belarus. Today, the official flag of the Republic of Belarus was lowered in front of the building of the Belarusian consulate in Erbil.

Fuad Hamad, honorary Consul of Belarus in Erbil, Iraq, confirmed to Zerkalo.io the information about the closure of Belarusian honorary consulates at the initiative of the Iraqi authorities and said that this is due to the migration crisis on the borders of Belarus and the EU countries.
«The Iraqi side believes that the closure of honorary consulates will minimize the issuance of visas to Iraqis to travel to Belarus. However, honorary consulates are not authorized to issue visas. I think that’s just a misunderstanding. I believe that this is a bad reason for closing the consulates, but this is their decision, and we must respect it»,– said Fuad Hamad, the Belarusian Consul.
At the beginning of the week, Viktor Rybak, the Ambassador of Belarus to Iraq and Turkey, held meetings with the leadership of the Iraqi Autonomous Region of Kurdistan, met with Masoud Barzani, the former President of Kurdinstan, and Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan. Barzani urged to look at the problem of illegal migration from a humanitarian point of view and with the help of humanitarian organizations to protect the lives of Kurdish women and children who are in Belarus.
The migration crisis continues in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. Official Vilnius, Riga and Warsaw believe that the Belarusian authorities artificially organized the flow of refugees from the Middle East and call it hybrid aggression.
