Lithuanian Railways decided not to satisfy the applications of the Belarusian Potash Company, Belintertrans and Belkalii-Migao for the transportation of Belarusian potash fertilizers. According to the press service of the company, they came after the Lithuanian Railways announced the termination of the transportation contract with Belaruskali in accordance with the decision of the Lithuanian government, which recognized it as inconsistent with national security amid the US sanctions against the manufacturer.
The Lithuanian Railways decided not to take any action in response to the Belarusian Potash Company’s request while the relevant applications are evaluated by the Coordinating Commission for National Security. The applications of the other two were rejected because they did not have valid contracts with the Lithuanian side.
The press service emphasizes that the decision of the Lithuanian government does not contain a clear ban on the transportation of fertilizers under contracts with other companies. Two more transport requests were later received. They were submitted by Lit Salt Trade and Belintertrans Baltik. They have also been referred to the commission. There are no decisions on them. The application from Belintertrans Baltik was received on January 25.
It became known yesterday that Belaruskali has already warned the Latvian Railways that it will seek compensation for losses due to the termination of the contract.
