Today, on December 16, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held an online meeting with Anniken Huitfeldt, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, at which the issue of continuing the cooperation of Yara with Belaruskali was raised. It is reported that Huitfeldt agreed with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya in the position on the actions of Yara.
Discussion of cooperation between the Norwegian company Yara and Belaruskali was an important topic of the meeting. Despite the US sanctions against Belaruskali that came into force this month, as well as new sanctions against the Belarusian Potash Company, Yara continues to buy Belarusian potash fertilizers. Tsikhanouskaya saw Huitfeldt’s understanding and noted that Belarusians consider it unethical to cooperate with the «wallets» of the regime, it is important to diplomatically isolate the regime and not allow contacts with its representatives until the demand of the Belarusian people for the release of all political prisoners is fulfilled.
In addition, during the meeting, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Norway for its active position and support for the fifth package of EU sanctions and noted that it is important to close the loopholes in the sanctions and increase pressure on the regime. Due to the fact that Norway is an active member of the UN Security Council, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for raising the Belarusian issue at the UN and discussing the creation of an international tribunal on the crimes of the regime.
During the meeting, the people’s leader also noted that Norway is already providing assistance to the Belarusian civil society: it supports EHU, ECLAB, the Human Rights House, allocates grants to media and culture, and has also participated in the launch of the IAPB platform for collecting evidence of crimes of the regime. She also called for continued assistance to independent media, civil society, human rights defenders, students and academics.
