The United States confirms its support for independent media and the Belarusian people, who deserve a better future. This was stated at a press conference on the occasion of the day of solidarity with Belarus by Julie Fisher, the US Special Envoy to Belarus. She noted that the political confrontation continues in Belarus, new political prisoners appear, including journalists, and the pressure on independent media is not decreasing.

«Almost every day we hear the authorities recognize media as extremist, adding them to the list, which today includes almost all major independent media and many smaller ones. Every day, Lukashenka’s regime continues to attack independent media, voices that tell the truth to the world about what is happening in the country. These efforts to remove the truth and those who tell it will fail, as it happened in the twentieth century,» she said.

Julie Fisher reminded that Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya urged to devote the day of solidarity with Belarus to the support of independent media. The United States stands in solidarity with journalists and supports their right to do their work, to express their opinions freely. The Special Envoy reminded the Belarusian authorities of their international obligations to protect fundamental freedoms: freedom of assembly, expression and media.

«Strong independent media and access to information are conditions for the rule of law and are absolutely essential for the successful prosperity of modern society. The people of Belarus deserve a better future, and the United States continues to support them,» Fisher added.
