Reuters, citing Antony Blinken, reports that the U.S. has imposed visa restrictions on 25 people including lawmakers connected with the regime in Belarus for undermining democracy in Belarus with politically motivated trials such as that of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
According to Blinken, those who took part in the introduction of the death penalty in Belarus for people convicted of terrorism are subject to visa restrictions.
The restrictions imposed by the U.S. include those complicit in the laws:
— on death penalty for “attempted acts of terrorism”;
— on revoking citizenship from Belarusians charged with “extremism”;
— on confiscating property for taking “unfriendly actions towards Belarus”.
In addition, in an official press release on the U.S. State Department website, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken mentioned a number of recent politically motivated trials against Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Volha Kavalkova, Aliaksandra Herasimenia, Aliaksandr Apeikin and Ales Bialiatski.
«The Lukashenka regime also continues to hold as a political prisoner Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, who has dedicated his life to defending human rights and advancing democratic change in Belarus. We will not stand by as this regime continues to harass and repress peaceful protesters, the democratic opposition, journalists, unionists, activists, human rights defenders, and everyday Belarusians,” Blinken said.
According to Blinken, those regime officials targeted in today’s action also include members of the so-called National Assembly of Belarus.
«Some of these individuals have also supported legislation revoking citizenship from those outside the country charged with “extremism,” and confiscating property for taking “unfriendly actions towards Belarus” – similarly aimed at repressing and intimidating the democratic opposition and civil society,» Blinken stated.
