Today it became known that the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) received consultative status with the UN ECOSOC after five years of attempts and delaying the process by Russia and China.
It’s the first case in the history when a Belarusan NGO receives such a status. And the main thing is that now not only the regime, but also the Belarusian society will have its voice at the UN.
What else does this status give?
The BHC will be able to directly and more closely communicate and cooperate with the UN, participate in events and conferences held within the framework of the UN, make oral and written statements, have access to the UN territory.
«This is an important decision also because it was made despite the liquidation of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee by the authorities. This is a recognition that a public organization does not need formal registration, but real activity,» the BHC stressed.
Now not only the voice of the Lukashenka’s Foreign Ministry will be heard at the UN, but also of the Belarusian civil society.
